Consumer Fraud?

Thrive Market sounds like such a good idea. It’s an on-line store that carries only products (food, skin care, etc.) they have determined to be good for your health. In addition, each time you buy something they provide products to families who otherwise could not afford to own such healthful items. All this for a simple $79.99 annual fee. In addition to the products themselves, of course.

I was offered a 30 day free trial membership so, when I saw a couple products I thought I might like, I subscribed. I didn’t like one product at all and the other was not worth its price to me. So on day 28, I unsubscribed.

Then I got a response thanking me for trying them and asking why I unsubscribed. So, I said it did not seem to be value for my time and money to me.

Then I got a response to that. They didn’t think I had given them enough of a trial so they were extending my trial period for another 30 days. I said, “No thanks. Please unsubscribe me as I requested.”

Then I got an offer for a year’s membership for the reduced price of $29.99.

Again I said, “No thanks. Please unsubscribe me as I requested.”

The only response I got was one or two emails per day encouraging me to buy this or that product.

Then came the kicker. “We tried to charge your annual membership today but your credit card was rejected. Please, update your card info.”

Never was I so happy to have had a credit card cancelled.

Today I got that message about the invalid card along with another ad. I wonder how long the ads will continue before they finally realize I’m NOT buying anything? Including paying the annual fee?

Linda

  1. Did you cancel the card or did you just luck out? I hate signing up for anything any more because they never leave you alone.

  2. wow.
i hate being inundated like that. i buy very little on the internet.
there is one place that i buy face cream.
it’s the most natural and the best I’ve ever used. EVER.
it’s Boom Silk by cindi joseph.
it has only four ingredients and you can pronounce every one of them.
i will never be without it now. but other than that and a few books… that’s it.
i know some people who shop exclusively on the internet and never seem to have a problem!
but i’m kind of like Sandie.
and now… with your experience… just doubles my hesitancy!
it can happen with charities too.

i joined the sierra club because i admire much of the work they do.
then all of a sudden i got covered up with every animal charity under the sun.
some legitimate but some probably weren’t.
i finally managed to get unsubscribed to all of them.
the sierra club had obviously SOLD my email and mailing address to everybody.
it’s sad. because it made me feel badly toward some very good charities.

  3. You definitely were lucky. I’m pretty skeptical about making purchases online. I do buy a whole bunch on Amazon though. It sure beats shopping and they have just about everything I look for. The best part is that I can return whatever I don’t like. I’ve found in the past that trying to cancel some of those 30 day or 60 day offerings before they charge your card can be difficult to cancel. Some don’t allow you to cancel online. You get a phone number that takes forever to get through to the cancellation department.

  4. I have been temped many times to try a 30-day free trail but just haven’t. After reading your problem, I think my mind is made up….No Thank You!
