Back in the ’60s my Mom worked with a woman who would make statements like: “Today you will see men wearing hats.” Or, “today you will see pregnant women.” Or, “Today you will see people wearing red.”
And Mom would see men wearing hats or pregnant women or people wearing red. Not that more men were wearing hats or more women were pregnant or more people were wearing red. It wasn’t even that Mom was actually SEEING more of them. It’s just that when she saw them, Mom was more aware of seeing them.
So the other day the author of a blog I read every day, which you can check out at http://gypsyjournal.net/blog/, wrote that driving I-10 through west Texas was so boring the only thing to do was count roadkill.
So today we drove I-10 through west Texas and guess what we were more aware of seeing.
Gee, thanks, Nick.

I’m always happy to be able to add that special “something’ to your traveling adventures.
Nick
My wife and I count all sorts of things while we drive (both in the coach and in the car). She counted 71 hawks (any type of hunting bird, up to and including eagles) on our car trip from Houston to Del Rio, TX. We also count state license plates (and got 49 out of 50 on our coach trip from Houston to Key West, FL). It keeps you awake and attentive to your driving environment. Oh, and also motorcycles versus hawks (sometimes one wins, sometimes the other). My wife keeps a journal so that we don’t forget how many of any one thing we have at the moment (which is easy to do if there’s a long time between any one type of thing). 😎
My last drive through west Texas was in Nov. I, too, noticed the abundance of roadkill, but also counted oil wells and huge wind turbines. I rather enjoyed the journey.
