Sunshine!

We’ve been having brilliant sunshine here the last couple of days. Sunshine so bright I have to fight the urge to put on sunglasses in the house. You’d think the weather must be balmy, right?

Wrong. Sunshine like this at this time of year means there is no cloud cover to act as an insulating layer to keep earth’s warmth close to the ground. Instead the temperature is below zero with wind chill warnings.

And it will stay that way all though the three-day weekend.

It will start to warm up a bit Tuesday–finally getting temperatures above zero.

That means it will be warm enough on Wednesday to snow.

Bright sunshine here in winter does not mean what your instinct says it should. This is a case where experience outweighs instinct.

  1. it almost cost my dad some serious problems one year.
we were new to Northern Minnesota. and he could walk to work … about a quarter of a mile.
and the sun was shining bright that morning he decided to walk.
the thing is… it was -45 degrees below zero!
it actually stayed that temperature for more than a week that year! many weeks actually. there was a solid sheet of ice INSIDE my bedroom window! I guess from my breath? who knows!!! I slept in long johns and knee socks and inside a sleeping bag in my bed with blankets and quilts on top! … and Yes! we had Heat!

so I guess that bright sunny day was like Heaven was smiling upon us. and oh my! it really is beautiful on all that snow. a sparkly deadly wonderland!
I mean it was always cold there but none of our family was used to That kind of cold!
and snow was of course everywhere.
his entire face got frost bitten on the way to work. they had him go back outside and lightly rub snow on his face. apparently you can’t warm the skin up too quickly or it’s super painful and even dangerous!

he called my mother and she called the other women. so… we children had to wrap our heads in scarves around our mouths so our lungs wouldn’t freeze!!! ALL with the sun shining brightly!!!
your post brought that memory back to me in amazing clarity! Thank You! (I think! LOLOLOL!!!)
    happy Valentine’s Day btw! XOXOXO
