I’ve just begun to read a book where a strong and good man had just been appointed Admiral of a ship in His Majesty’s Navy. The ship has a bad reputation, having sent off three previously reporting admirals. This is how I see that going.
Our man arrived at the dock to discover no boat had been sent to bring him out to the ship. So, he made his own arrangements and arrived on board to discover a group of officers sitting about and laughing while several sailors simply stood around.
He knew the officers were the sons of wealthy and influential men who didn’t feel the need to obey an admiral. He quickly took the measure of the group and picked out the ringleader. He turned to one of the sailors and told him to call all hands on deck.
When all had arrived he returned to the officers, singling out the leader, and loudly said, “This man has disobeyed a direct order. He will be stripped and flogged as will anyone serving under me who does such a thing. I will take volunteers to do this. If none volunteer I will pick some of you.” Several men stepped forward. Then the admiral turned to the other officers and said, “While this is happening you will all return to your quarters or be sent to the brig. Your choice.” Again several sailors stepped towards those officers. The officers quickly turned away.
Thus, discipline was restored to the ship.
Now, I’ll continue reading to see what actually happened.
