Moon Dust

Sometimes the song playing in my head gives me clues as to when I heard it. For instance, the song Close to You, which was sung by The Carpenters, had to have been recorded in the mid 1960s.

The lyrics include the words, “On the day that you were born the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true. So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue.”

Dave and I heard them sing that song when they performed at the Minnesota State Fair. Since we didn’t meet until after the fair in 1964 it had probably been recorded by the 1965 fair but possibly not long before as The Carpenters were popular only for a few years.

And it had to have been before the fair of 1969 because in July of that year Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and we learned that, no matter how golden the moon looked when viewed from Earth, moon dust was actually crushed gray rocks.

That’s not something I would have liked to have sprinkled in my hair.

Linda
