3-point stance

The first time our daughter drove her semi-tractor cab to visit us she invited us to climb up into the cab to see where she lives most of the time. But first, she taught us about the 3-point stance. We each have two hands and two feet; at all times three of the four are to be anchored–either on the ground or step or holding a grab bar. For instance, if you are standing on a step, at least one hand has to be holding on. If you are lifting a foot, both hands have to be holding on. And so forth.

Today I discovered that, without even thinking about it, I use this 3-point stance system in our shower. The shower has a vertical grab bar at each side of the sliding glass doors and a horizontal grab bar at the back of the shower. I sit on a shower stool while showering. When I’m ready to get up I use two bars and both feet to keep me steady until I am firmly on my feet. Then I hold on while moving my feet, one at a time, to a new position. The I stand still while I transfer one hand at a time to new positions. My fear of falling in the shower is greatly reduce by using this 3-point stance system. Thanks, kid, for teaching me this.

  1. interesting! and valuable information.
I have found that since I had the double vision ordeal this year for awhile (I honestly think it might have been a TIA because it gradually got better. and now totally gone.) that I have done what I call ‘Living Awareness.’ I’ve always been especially bad about just not staying AWARE!
I slow my movements and make them more deliberate. literally being IN the moment.
so many falls or other accidents are when our mind is miles away and we’re still accomplishing something!
like getting out of the tub!
a great post RV Braveheart! (wish I had those sliding glass doors!)

  2. I got tangled on my own feet and fell off the curb. So now if there is a curb I make sure I have something to hang on to before I move one foot to go up or down. Jim makes a good place to hang on to.

  3. I have methods as well, but my shower space is extremely small, no room for “dancing” and one of my friends who is quite slim, was astounded at the lack of space…but it works for me of little balance.

and Tammy I am going to have slow down… I tripped over the short end leg (read squared with sharp edges) of the bed earlier this week and caught my little toe – it’s still feeling sad that it was injured… I was wearing sox but no slippers, not even my scuffs. I need to get some closed in slippers…

and I also could do with a new body!!!
