Apothecary

I’ve been reading a lots of books lately that are set in Victorian or Regency times. In those books, when someone becomes ill they often rely on an apothecary to administer some healing herbs as teas or mustard plasters. Those herbs were all natural products although some turned out to be quite poisonous.

When alternative treatments began being produced chemically they became known as drugs and the person dispensing them was a druggist.

Then drugs became connected to the word illicit so we started referring to our drugs as medicine. And the druggist became a pharmacist so now we get our medicine from a pharmacy.

But, the younger generation is now into natural healing products and essential oils. Are we about to return to the name apothecary?

  1. Had to drop a note to say this made me laugh.

(Did you know that the main chain of pharmacies in English Canada is… Shoppers Drug Mart? Heh heh.)

  2. our state legislature just approved of the growing and dispensing of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
only they got the cart before the horse! no one knows the criteria under which the medicinal drug will be/is sold! kind of like getting a doctor’s slip to be off work. it’s crazy! and it’s apparently still illegal to drive with it in your car. because it’s a federal offense. who knows how this will all pan out!
there are stores opening up albeit prematurely… all over the place.
it will be interesting if the younger generations change our medicinal drugs/big pharma situation with natural cures and supplements. just like they’re changing the norm of ‘inheriting’ their parent’s “treasures!”
nobody WANTS all that STUFF!!! and I think the parents are quite hurt. but it’s just not what the kids want.

  3. yes our legacies are certainly in question with the younger generation…I tried to gift to my niece a perfectly good washing basket that was actually my Mothers’ so it’s probably from the 1960s. She refused it, saying she had a plastic basket…ooops. Well I still have it, here it’s too big and awkward, but I’m thinking it should be inside as one of my storage for larger pieces of fabric instead of oddles of bags/other…
